Classic Game Room HD – SILPHEED for Sega CD review

Classic Game Room was the FIRST classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999. Returning in 2008 with new episodes, Classic Game Room breaks out a review of SILPHEED for the Sega CD add-on for the Sega Genesis Megadrive 16-bit video game console. The Mega Drive had a few short lived add-ons like the SegaCD and 32x. Silpheed originally came out years earlier, I had a copy of it for the PC back in the day. This version uses an early polygon graphical system and looks dates, but plays as well as any of the best SHMUPS out today. This is a tremendous SHMUP vertical scrolling space shooter where you pilot the lone spaceship against wave after wave of alien bad guys. Blow them up with a variety of weapons and power ups in this 3D universe created for the Sega in 1993. Rockin' electric music thumps away as you blast those bad guys into space dust! Silpheed may not be one of the best shooters ever made, but it is a sleeper hit that holds up well against today's games because of the well created gameplay and difficulty. Maniac shooters like Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga are better known now, but Silpheed does not disappoint as you can see from the footage. This game should be made into a new 2D shooter with 3-D elements for the PS3, Xbox 360 Live Arcade or Wii. There was a Silpheed released for the PS2 called Silpheed Lost Planet. Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in ...

  1. That 3D intro was fucking badass. Can you imagine creating those 3D models with late 80′s modeling software? They probably had to make their own modeling software too, those guys have some serious talent.

  2. This review sucks balls. This idiot actually says he’s seen better looking Genesis games and complains about jaggies, blocky polygons etc… This was the early nineties!!! Mark is a complete n00b when it comes to certain systems.

  4. @Lupucillo
Or, they are true 3D, but are made to appear like the old side-scrolling platforms, like the last Mario games have been.

  5. @georgef551 Yes, as with all consoles, the next generation killed its production. The Sega Saturn was out, the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 were coming soon, it’s a never ending cycle.
Oddly, I’ve been seen more and more sprite-based games lately, looks like the tendency is to return to the Sega Genesis and SNES classic game styles but with the power of the newer systems to back them up.

  6. @Lupucillo
Unfrtunately, SNES’s weaknesses ultimately did it in. That, and the 64-bit arena.

  7. Kickass!

  8. @georgef551 The folks at Argonaut actually worked a bit on the Super FX chip towards the end of the Super Nintendo’s life span, and the results were amazing. Vortex and the unreleased Star Fox 2 run faster and smoother than the first Super FX games, and in full 3D environments.

  10. @Outlander11 It looks like PS1 on the videos…

  11. One of the reasons to own a Sega CD. The graphics were mind blowing back then. The CD music and the communications chatter of your allies made things even more epic. Honestly Silpheed is not one of my favorite shmups but it’s a really fun game.

Who cares if the backgrounds are pre-rendered the effect is clever and it looks great.

  12. @Outlander11 First, it isn’t the Genesis alone computing these graphics, it’s the Sega CD.
    Second, it’s pre-rendered.

  13. @Outlander11 you’ve never heard of pre rendered graphics?

  14. that’s pretty fucking intense.

  15. I was born in 1993, and i hate it when people older than me say ill never appreciate older games, but the first system I had was a sega. Then I got my hands on older systems, and worked my way from there. And I love old games. the base ground for all the games we play today, most if not all deserve their praise.

  16. Did You Ever Get To Find Your Original Copy Of Silpheed on PC?

  17. dude this game looks awesome now i have a reason to play my sega cd

  18. @themadmallard
    Interesting.
CD music was a good workaround.
Albeit less powerful, the SFX xhip did the same thing for the SNES, although the in-cart thing probably limited the throughput quite some. (That, and keeping the game’s costs down.)

  19. @georgef551

they did, 8 channels of pcm. they didn’t give it enough ram to load samples into it from the disc. it was rarely used. they just placed music from the cd track instead.

also, the sega cd had its own CPU, so when plugged in, the sega/cd genesis combo became a dual core system.

  20. And the end of the review is, as always, a Sega CD ad.

  21. @Alexei18XC I dissagree, After playing Shuttle Squadron on 32X every other game with polygonal models untill the saturn looked like shit.

  22. Skip the fucking here 0:01
